Starting in September 2004, Grade 9 will begin a native- language course in rhetoric and public speaking. According to the article, the students will be given the tools for oral presentation, conversation, proper register and debate. The Ministry is hoping that the students will learn how to "listen" as well. The Ministry spokesperson emphasized that the students will learn to research their topics, stick to a schedule, work on their body language and be prevented from using slang. The final exam will be oral. I am ecstatic about this turn of events. This means that by the time the students get to 10th grade, they will have rudimentary knowledge of research, oral presentation and debating. Moreover, when we begin to do our oral work, research projects and debates (We all do debates on some level, don't we?), our students will already have experienced the excitement and necessary demeanor that is part and parcel of oral presentation. At long last, progress and what will hopefully turn out to be interdisciplinary cooperation.
