This is exactly why I almost always use the reading tapes when the kids
read from the textbook. Among other reasons, they learn how to
pronounce what they read. They do lots of silent reading - other texts,
questions, extensive reading etc so I like to allow them to read the
passages from the textbook with the tape. I also told all my classes to
please watch DVD movies with the ENGLISH subtitles during the summer --
and better yet, watch the same movie a few times. This should help on
all counts, including pronunciation.

The thread about pronouncing 'h', and other pronunciation problems, seems to have missed the most important part of learning correct pronunciation. First you start with listening. At first the student won't be able to differentiate between saqy, 'men and man', but gradually, as he learns to hear the difference, it is easier for him to learn how to form his mouth and make the difference. And yes, it is important. It is very confusing to students if they think that it is ' 1 men' '2 men'. Why, then, is the singular written with an 'a'? Jennifer
