I've read in the letter by judy steiner sent the principals
(can be read at anglit.net) - it specifically says that the
number of recommended hours of english per class a week is 5.
according to this she listed all the things that we, the
english teachers are required to do in the classrooms
(read for 20 minutes, book reports, projects and the list
goes on and on).
however due to the cutbacks over the years most schools
(to my knowledge) are given only 4 hours a week (jh and hs).
why are we expected to follow all the requirements
while we don't get the hours the inspector herself admits
are needed to complete them.
not to mention the fact that 5 hours per class means
most teachers will need to work with only 4 classes to
get the "misrat em" while today most have to teach
5 classes to reach the same misra. there is a big
difference in terms of work load.
a very convient way to save money on more teachers
while we are expected to work so much harder than just
a few years ago when i remember many schools had
the budget to teach 5 hours per class.
this is exactly why we are striking - getting those hours
back is vital even more than getting the miserable
increase to our salary which will be added over 3 years
and of course will require us to work even harder than
we work today!!!
let's hope Ran Eres will get those hours back - it will be
the start of a real reform is the system (and i haven't
even stated talking about class size, LD students, and
the fact that we will have to eat a hot dog for lunch from
the local "cafeteria" (which of course we will pay for) so
that we don't starve to death while we look for a chair
to sit on until 4 o'clock every day.(at least those teachers
who joins the "wonderful reform" of the Histadrut.)
