In addition to that, American education spends an enormous amount of time developing reading and writing skills at the elementary school level. Moreover, reading a new book and reporting back on it is an activity which is required every couple of weeks. Punctuation is taught. Internet skills are taught (not just copy/paste). Compositions are written and MARKED. Can this compare to what our children learn? And we are asking them to perform this activity in a foreign language, which, for the most part, needs much more work than it is possible to give in four hours a week.
