I suppose it is obvious that what Adele is referring to is for NATIVE 
SPEAKERS of English.  In addition to that, American education spends an 
enormous amount of time developing reading and writing skills at the 
elementary school level.  Moreover, reading a new book and reporting back on 
it is an activity which is required every couple of weeks.  Punctuation is 
taught.  Internet skills are taught (not just copy/paste).  Compositions are 
written and MARKED.

Can this compare to what our children learn?  And we are asking them to 
perform this activity in a foreign language, which, for the most part, needs 
much more work than it is possible to give in four hours a week.
