----- Original Message ----- From: byk - byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: David Graniewitz' letter Although I perfectly understand David's despondency after four weeks of strike, and although the strike seems to be definitely taking on a life of its own, I beg you all to remember that the reasons you are striking (I long ago saw the writing on the wall and left school life). You are not only striking for better conditions for yourselves, both financial and physical, but also for a serious change in education in this country. That means that, though you are high school teachers, the improvements most necessary are those at the elementary school level. Today, I teach privately. Many of my students are those who have spent years abroad. If I compare their level of education to that of similar students educated here, the gap is enormous. Whereas third and fourth graders from abroad are able to write a full-length essays, using correct punctuation, are able to search the internet and summarize efficiently, have a wide knowledge of what is going on in the world and can discuss it intelligently, our own students are woefully lacking in these skill in Hebrew. We, the English teachers, have to address this lack in a foreign language. So, yes, David and the others, the Irgun has failed you. Perhaps it is time to consider actively improving your union. The strike has become a grass roots movement all over the country. The teachers must be running out of money, although one friend has found alternative employment. But , despite everything, you must go on until you get what you deserve, and what our children deserve. The parents are ready to support you. Get your message across, not only as to the woefully inadequate salaries, but also the conditions in the classrooms and the schools.
