----- Original Message ----- From: ETAI office - etaioffice@xxxxxxxxx Subject: ETAI Newsletter 4: November 2007 Newsletter 4: November 2007. "If you can't come to ETAI, ETAI will come to you." Dear Readers, I'm not a gambler, but recent events at ETAI can only be described as "being on a roll". The ETAI-sponsored, "Tommy Sands Concert", initiated by Laurie Ornstein and generously and graciously hosted by Kaye College, was enjoyed by all who attended. Tommy took us on an emotional roller coaster from laughter to tears with his beautiful music and stories. The "sing-alongs" brought back memories for some in the audience, his humour made us laugh and some of his songs, like "There were Roses", about two friends killed by conflict, brought tears to our eyes. Tommy Sands was accompanied by his son and multi-talented daughter, who plays several instruments, dances, entertains and sings like a lark. Both the songs and the stories left the audience with much food for thought, such as the comment about laments: "Sad songs are meant to take the sadness out of you." If you missed this concert, you missed something really special. On November 1st, ETAI held a mini-conference in Azor. For a first-time event in this area, it was well attended with 43 participants. Penny Ur's enlightening opening talk was on the subject of "Use of L1 in the English Classroom". As is usual with a session with Penny, she left the audience with an important message for teachers: Whatever you do as a teacher, think about it and don't just do what some people might say you should or should not do. The workshops in the second part of this mini-conference, one on the use of games and the other on the use of drama, were also very much appreciated by the participants. I hope that the information about the above events (which were free of charge for ETAI members) has whetted your appetite, and that you are now determined not to miss our up-coming regional winter conference at Kaye College in Beer Sheva on Thursday , December 6th. Join ETAI and enjoy the member registration fee. The train service to Beer Sheva is fantastic, so we expect people to come from far and wide. We are working on improving and up-dating the ETAI website on ETNI, and for this purpose Ann Shlapobersky and Micki Zaritsky have agreed to form an IT committee. Some decisions already made by the committee are that the table of contents of the current issue of the Forum and one featured article will shortly be available on the site. If you have any helpful suggestions for the site, please contact them at: ashlapo@xxxxxxxxx or mickiz@xxxxxxxxx I would like to remind you that we have launched another new initiative, "Institutional Membership". In the ETAI Forum which will be in the mail in a couple of weeks, we have included a letter addressed to school principals explaining the offer and a registration form for carrying out the procedure. We hope that ETAI members will encourage their principals to take us up on our offer, and those of you who are not ETAI members, we hope you will call the ETAI office (02-500-1844) to have the letter and form sent to you or your school. Until the next issue of the newsletter, best wishes, Nava Horovitz, ETAI Chair -- Marna Snyder ETAI Office Director Tel: 02-500-1844 mailto:etaioffice@xxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------- ** Etni homepage - www.etni.org ** ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
