Subject: English and the school time table - a summary of responses

I would like to thank the teachers who responded to my request for information and views on the teaching of English and the school time table. It appears that most teachers agree with the inspectorates recommendation to spread the hours over the week . There are advantages to a double lesson as well but there is very little support for teaching units comprised of double lessons only. This is especially true for weaker levels.

Of course we are part of the wider school system in Israel and there are
many considerations in building a time table that have little or no
connection with what is pedagogically beneficial to the students. Among
these are the needs of teachers who have to earn a living by working in two
schools and others who are limited by the need to accommodate a metapelet
who is taking care of their children at home. Add to this many school
principals who are well on the way to "understanding" students who do not
see any real need for four hours of classroom work, when the bagrut is "only
an unseen and a composition".

It is always encouraging to see how passionate English teachers are when it
comes to the wider educational issues. Let's hope that this translates into
more success than sometimes seem possible, and that we make our voices heard
on the question of a time table to suit our students' needs.

All the best,

Steve Hellmann
