I think I have made this suggestion before. Allow me to make it yet again.
ENGLISH TEACHERS! YOU ARE IN A SELLERS' MARKET!
And please don't think that by asking not only for what you deserve, but
also for what the going price is, that you are doing badly by your
students -present and to come. They can only benefit from well-paid, alert
and calm teachers.
As a private tutor, I cover a wide area, with pupils from many different
schools. Do you know how many - [particularly in elementary school, do not
have an English teacher? Many leave before the Autumn Holidays begin,
having endured a month of hell. One of my students in the fifth grade had
no fewer than FIVE English teachers this year. The class ended up being
taught by the maths teacher. And I am talking about a prestigious
neighbourhood in the centre of the country.
My solution. Form your own union, to include all qualified English
teachers. Demand a proper salary. (My accountant says that 12000 shekels a
month should be the base salary.) Demand no more than 20 pupils in a class.
Demand a proper method for dealing with discipline problems. And don't pay
attention when the powers that be ask you to be reasonable. This is
reasonable. And, as someone said about the bagrut marking - what are they
going to do? Bring in Thai workers?
And while you are about it, in order to get the press on your side, bring in
TV crews with hidden cameras, so that all those people who make snide
remarks about teachers can see just what a teacher's life is like in a
classroom of 40 heterogeneous and badly behaved pupils.
And please don't blame the parents. Yes, they are often critical and
unsupportive, but the school is the place where a proper learning enviroment
has to be created.
I, too, was once a school teacher, and know whereof I speak.
