Subject: Re: My reflections on the literature course

I read this posting with great interest, as "anonymous" has voiced my fears
about this programme. I have not yet started it (I am waiting for the
on-line course) but I am quite sure that what Anon says about it increasing
our workload is probably very true. I imagine the lit course run by Adele
Raemer will be a serious one, so my "bug bear" is not about the course
itself but about the nature of the programme.

I am very concerned at the prospect of students/teachers opting to take
part in the "Log" instead of doing a test. I think this is absolutely
unacceptable for the following reasons:
1) This will create a heavy workload for already overburdened and
under-remunerated teachers. As Anon correctly pointed out, the Ministry is
saving a HUGE amount of money on 2 modules that will probably not be tested
(i.e examiners will not have to be paid) but the teachers will not get this
money as a salary increase.

2) I know for a FACT that some students have copied their work for the
'LOG" and have received credit for successfully completing Module F on the
strenghth of work that is not their own. I was told this personally by a
student I work with privately. I asked him how he managed with doing all the
Lit assignments for the log (he is not known for his work ethic!!!) and he
said it wasn't a problem because he just copied all the work and never did
any of it himself. I understood also that he was not the only one. This is
nothing short of scandalous.

My main criticism of the new lit programme centres on two things 1) the
extra unremunerated work for teachers and 2) schools should not be given the
option of not being tested. This is a transparent ploy by the Ministry to
save money, in my opinion, and will lead to widespread cheating. Far from
"weeding out" students who are really not capable of 'doing 5 points, the
new lit programme will encourage basically 4 point kids to do 5 points
because they can get through the lit module either just by working hard, or
by simply copying the work from a more capable student.

I am taking advantage of this forum to voice my fears about the lit
programme and I have no problem signing my name, and I don't really see why
Anon was afraid to sign his/hers. S/he said nothing offensive , but merely
expressed an opinion. I also intend to write to Judy Steiner about this
matter and I would expect an official answer.
