I've also been "blamed" for being the only teacher who asks the kids to 
write stories, poems...creative writing!

I truly don't understand why kids are not writing creatively from Day One as 
we did in the "Old Country". Maybe that's why "we" also know how to write 
and spell!

This, as both Sara and David have pointed out  is a basic!

Here is the creative writing task I recently assigned to my 9th graders 
(5+).
Write a poem including at least 1 simile. (This was a follow up to reading 
the poem,
"Simile: Willow or Ginko" by Eve Merriam. They wrote some delightful poems 
and we also had a poetry reading in class!

What a pity they don't do similar things in their native tongue!
