Subject: Re: drop in attendance at lectures when material is put on line
I agree with every word, although I don't believe much will change in school
in the foreseeable future, because this is the most conservative system in
the world, and yes, our main function is babysitting.
However, I do believe something can be done to put more teachers'
'hishtalmuyot' online. I wanted to attend certain courses this year, but
traveling there and back by bus for hours was out of the question. I think
universities and colleges should consider opening such courses so that more
teachers could take them without wasting so much time traveling after a hard
day's work. They could "attend" a lecture online, contribute to courses'
forums and send homework to the course coordinator. I took an NBA course
online and it was the best 'histalmut' I've ever taken - thorough and
demanding, but I've learned a lot. I was given a deadline to do the work,
but I could do it whenever I had some free time, even at night. It was very
convenient and I wish we could have other courses online on various topics,
such as translation, LD students, teaching literature, class management,
etc.
