Somebody asked on the list what all this business is with the Thinking Skills.
. .

The old system and the new system in a nutshell on one leg,

By Barry Hillel Silverberg

Under the old system, the pupils studied stories, poems and a play.
They had to answer questions and many of them copied from the one pupil who
actually did the work.

Then there was the In between module era, when some teachers taught literature,
and others just said they did.

Soon, we will be using literature to teach Higher Oder Thinking Sillls. One
of these skills is making inferences. If our pupils can learn to make
inferences from, say, "all my Sons" , by dealing with questions such as:
Was Kate fully aware of her husband's guilt the whole time?
          or Does Anne admire Kate?
Did the speaker in 'Two Roads..." make the correct decision. . .

then they should be able to deal with issues such as:

Should we abide by the life and death decisions of political leaders who have
accepted bribes and are corrupt?

Should we enlist in the army when our leaders led us into a disastrous war
after appointing unsiutable people to run it?

Should we make more efforts to keep aggravating acronyms, abbreviations and
jargon out of our lives?

and finally,

Should we, as pupils, find out who has answered the Higher Order Questions and
copy them?
ANSWER: our parents studied the same works of literature, usually with teachers
who asked Higher Order Thinking Skills without calling it that because that's
what teaching Literature is about,
So we can find all the answers in the attic in their old notes.

So, Bambi A, have I helped you?

PS: Remember what Thumper said.

PPS: The Rag Doesn't need me as much as I need a rag. I find my self wiping
the Whipeboard with my sleeve.
