Thank you for this wonderful heartfelt letter of support.
I will pass it onto ETNI - English Teachers Network of Israel (a unique email
list and site (http://www.etni.org.il) in that it is run voluntarily and
provides the most incedible support (professional mostly but not only) to all
the English teachers of Israel.
I am very lucky to have the English teaching colleagues that we have in Israel
and I will ask the members to send your letter out to their contacts and so it
will be seen by thousands.
Thank you once again,

Jack Pillemer

  Hi,

I have just seen your PPT " Strike- related Powerpoint lesson - Review of
English Verb Tenses -problems in reaching the "Future Perfect" or beep! beep!
beep!- based on a lesson given to Boyar pupils on October 29th 2007 outside the
Ministry of Education."

and would like to voice my support for all teachers and my support of the
strike.

I belong to two local email lists and sent the following letter which was
disallowed by the moderators as being too political. Please feel free to pass
it along. Good luck with the strike.

  Regards

  Dear all,

As a past parent of a student in the Israeli school system, I feel that I
need to speak up in support of our teachers.

We entrust our children into the government school system, taking for granted
that our children will be educated to the highest standard and be able to reach
their maximum potential.

In essence we are giving, to our duly elected government, our prize
possessions and then leave it to the government to see that they are educated
in the best possible way..

  So what do they do?

They pay their employees, the teachers and custodians of our children, a
pittance. As if that were not enough, they put an average of 40 children in a
class. (Have you ever tried to control 5 teenagers for 1 hour, let alone 6 or
more?) As if that were not enough, these teachers need to psychologists as
well. As if that was not enough, they need to have the patience of saints. And
then.. After all this, go home to prepare tomorrows lesson and mark papers and
most time teach privately in order to earn a descent living.

I am so proud that the teachers across the country have started to do some
PR, but sadly it is so little so late.

It shocks me when I speak to parents of school children who say:

"But I would love 3 months holiday. I would love to only work half day."

And my question to them is "Where have you been hiding?"

I believe that it is the duty of every parent to support the teachers strike.
Pressure the government to meet with them. I believe (and I stand to be
corrected) that to date our Prime Minister, Mr. Olmert has not met with the
teachers' union.

If not, the caliber of the teachers of your children will fall rapidly. The
cost in extra education will cripple you and I am speaking from experience. You
as parents of current students and parents of babies take note. The status of
teachers needs to be uplifted and they need your support.

I in desperation had to take my son out of a government high school where
there were 40 children in a class and the teachers just did not care, or it
seemed actually cope.

I paid a handsome price to have him at a private school where every teacher
is hand picked. Where the teachers are loved and respected. Where the teachers
love their work. They are paid a living wage and the snowball effect is a
positive one and in the end it was worth every agora.

My message to all teachers out there. Try and hang in, but you need all the
positive "hasbara" you can get and you are the only ones who can do it. You
might then stand a fighting chance and hopefully have some parents behind you.

Good luck and I hope the situation is resolved quickly and satisfactorily for
our country's future well being.
