----- Original Message ----- From: Esther Revivo - estherrv@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: The Literature changes I would just like to clarify something with those "in the know": Someone previously mentioned the inability to use any other than "original texts," (or something similar.) Does that mean we will no longer be able to use literature from books such as "The Cool Collection," by ECB that have a great deal of vocabulary definitions alongside the texts? What did whoever mentioned this point mean? For, if one must teach literature to weak 4 pointers without the above necessary aid, the entire literature lesson will become one long boring futile exercise. When the teacher must explain every other word of poetic vocabulary, no enjoyment can be felt by pupils; it's a real pain in the neck. This is really important to me so thanks in advance to anyone who can clear this up. Regarding the in-service course for literature, I have one suggestion for the future: I cannot believe that in this day and age it isn't feasible to have such courses available on-line. Traveling after a full day of work is extremely difficult for us all. I can bring as an example the wonderful tutorial that Judy Steiner had on Anglit.net about grading compositions, which I did to "check myself." The tutorial for checking both D and F/G compositions took about 45 minutes each and was really fantastic. (I lack self-confidence in checking compositions and was thrilled to see I am really doing it correctly :) There must be some way to implement this for the Literature course. I have left on early pension due to a health issue, and currently teach only ninth and tenth grade classes, but I know that had I continued full-time, this course would pose a tremendous problem for me as I am zonked after a full day at school; don't own a car; get dizzy traveling; etc. Even the 25 minute bus trip to Beer Sheva leaves me so weak, I am not able to function properly the following day. Why can't online courses be an option for ALL such courses??
