To Esther and other questioning teachers,

My Beit-Shean (similar town as Netivot) students did the LIT pilot,
successfully.
Note, I'm on the literature steering committee, not in an ivory tower. My
students live in a ' development town' just as I do.
I do not think the LIT program for modules D and F is 'unreasonable demands'
 On the contrary.
It is all about how teachers relate to the program.
Perhaps if more teachers do the course and learn the program, open-minded,
the information will come out more balanced.

Tziona.

Jemnifer wrote, " Isn't it time for English teachers to down tools and

Excellent question! I've another couple to add:

1- Does ANYBODY "upstairs" care that this program will result in far fewer
pupils passing the 4 pt. Bagrut exam ???Yoohooo, up there in ivory towers--
in "development towns," unlike Givatyim; Hertzaliya Pituach etc., our pupils
cannot afford English chugim (just as most study neither Karate; origami nor
musical instruments.)

I corresponded with an anonymous participant in the HOTS hishtalmut this
year, who like myself, has taught weak four pointers for many years. She was
almost killed by criticism with remarks like,"Well, if they won't pass, then
they shouldn't be doing the four point bagrut exam in any case!" when she
mentioned our legitimate concern. This literature program (she wrote me) is
primarily geared to good five pointers and she has no idea how this program
can be implemented successfully in weak 4 point classes. This is extrememly
discouraging to the many teachers here in Israel who only through "blood,
sweat and tears" get pupils safely through the 4 point exam.

2- As a new irgun member, I really am in a quandary, and do think IT IS TIME
WE PUT OUR FEET DOWN AND SAY NO WAY JOSE as Jennifer mentioned (albeit, in a
more dignified manner) above!!!!! How to actually do this, however, is
unclear to me..... my feet are ready; just point me in the right
direction.... The four hours at our Ulpana BARELY allow us to cover what we
do at present. Asking us to squeeze more out of those hours is asking the
absolute impossible!!!

By the way, Irgun members-- what are YOU planning on doing next year? (You
can e-mail me directly to my private e-mail.)

Yours in Total Frustration and Apprehension,
Esther Revivo
