----- Original Message ----- From: byk - byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Two important points about LD students Renee and Rachelle made two important pooints about LD students. Renee pointed out the obvious (so often hard to see) that these students are going to have to manage in the real world. Rachelle pointed out that students who forgot their equiipment 'managed without the recording'. There are too many students being diagnosed as LD. I once again stress that I am not ignoring the fact that there are students with problems, but we all know that after the parents have coughed up some 4000 shekels, the tester is loathe to send them away empty handed, so without considering the burden this places on the school system, they send them off with the 'easy' dispensations - reading, disregarding spelling mistakes and extra time. I suggest that the Ministry find a way of testing at their own expense, and that early interventiion in remedial reading programs be instituted. If the number of LD students is reduced to the percentage that can realistically be expected in any given population, then all the technical problems that teachers now face, will be very much reduced. By the way, does anyone know how many other disciplines face the problems that English teachers do? How many teachers teaching literature or history have to record?
