Subject: an ex-NYer speaks

As a former teacher in the NYC school system, I'd like to comment on the
salaries that were reported: Sure, they look impressive compared to ours
(and this doesn't even take into consideration the many fringe benefits that
the are provided thanks to the UFT, from whom our unions could learn a thing
or two!), but relatively speaking, teachers are still among the lowest paid
professionals in the States (and probably the world as a whole).
Besides the cost of living consideration, it should be pointed out that in
too many cases, the money is simply 'combat pay' ; public schools are not
the place for the faint of heart!

Add to this the fact that if teachers opt to send their own children to
private schools for whatever reason/s, as most do (since they have 'inside
information' about what goes on in the so-called public institutions of
learning), they hardly have any purchase power left after paying high
tuition costs.

So, you see, we might as well stay here and keep complaining; who knows,
perhaps one day we'll be paid a greater fraction of what we're worth! (In
the meantime, we'll continue working with dedication, and attempt to deal
with whatever obstacles are placed before us.)

As they say back in Brooklyn, "Ya ain't gonna get rich bein' a teach!"

From one who's 'been there/done that' ...
