----- Original Message ----- Subject: coordinator- job description From: Leah Harris <morahharris@xxxxxxxxx> To all English coordinators - past, present and future, Many people have written to me requesting that I publicize the various job-descriptions that were sent to me. Everyone agreed that there are no official ministry guidelines, and that the job varies from school to school, depending on many factors, including the expectations of both the principal and the coordinator. One thing that nobody mentioned as a responsibility of the coordinator is mentoring new teachers - I'd be interested in hearing if anyone (besides me...) has that as part of their job. Here are some excerpts from letters I received (I thank the writers for allowing me to pass this on): 1. Division of labor, i.e. together with my staff members it is my responsibility to assign classes to each teacher. Not the number of hours each one is supposed to teach but which one is teaching which class and which level. 2. Organizing staff meetings (including taking care of the content of these meeting). 3. Responsible for students' transition from a certain level to another (i.e. any student who wants to go up/down or that the teacher recommends that he go up/down has to come to me for approval). 4. Passing on information, i.e. any relevant school or ministry information regarding English is being passed on to the staff by me. 5. Keeping updated lists of all the groups and all levels for administrative and educational purposes (for instance, so that the right Bagrut questionnaires are being ordered). 6. Responsible for all diagnostic tests: In our school we have 2 types of diagnostic tests. The first is given to new students such as 7th graders who have just begun junior high or new students who moved from other places to us. The second is given to all 7th-10th grade students towards the end of the school year and which gives the teacher additional info about his/her students (all students in each class sit for the same test) so that his/her opinion about moving a student up/down is strengthened. 7. Responsible for book lists. It's true that we sit as a staff and decide together which books we want to use for the coming year but once people have made up their minds it is my responsibility to pass on the list to the administration so that students will get an updated book list before they go on their summer vacation. 8. Remedial work - this is the most problematic part. We do not get any ministry budgets to help out students who need remedial help but here and there it happens that a teacher's hours cannot all be given in a class so it is my job to match the students in need with a suitable teacher. 9. Communication with students - sometimes it happens that a student has complains (justified or unjustified) towards his English teacher. In such a case a student, of course, knows he can turn to me and that I'll try to mediate. 10. Communication with parents - same as above. Sometimes parents feel (justifiably or not) that they do not get satisfactory answers from their son's teacher or that their son does not tell them all the details - in such cases they know they can always contact me. *(Shoshana Ben Yaakov, 7th-12th grades, 650 students)* "...an enormous amount of my time is spent dealing with hakbatsot. I have to make up a test for the incoming yuds, then anayse the marks to divide the classes into hakbatsot, and I have to keep updating all the changes on the computer throughout the year. Because we don't have a data-base, this means updating both the class lists and the hakbatsa lists separately. I also get recommendations from teachers at the end of the year so that I can make changes for the following year if necessary. A record has to be kept of all the pupils who have done modules at the end of yud,and yud aleph, and those who repeat those modules in the winter. WE have to enter their grades on the computer, both the magenim and the exam. This is because the pupils often don't know what they are supposed to be doing or register for exams that they are not supposed to be doing, and the racazim don't know too much about these things either. I have to organize the dates and groups of the Oral Bagrut. Sopmetimes there are pupils who are finishing either 3 or 4 points in the winter, so I have to check that if there are any such pupils, they must be tested orally before that time. I have to check the magen marks to make sure that every kid has one for each module he or she is doing. Oh, for the good old days when there was just one exam at the end of 12th grade, one magen, no magen for the Oral Bagrut! I have to meet with the principal once a week to keep him informed about everything that is happening, and to get updates from him concerning all sorts of admin. matters. I have to deal with complaints and queries from parents and pupils, ands even sometimes, home-room teachers. I have to help new teachers find their way, and if necessary, go into classes to observe. I have to go to co-ordinators' meetings with the regional inspector about once a month. I use the weekly meeting that I have with my staff to relay information I have received from the principal or from the inspector. Unfortunately, with so much admin. work, there is hardly any time left for doing more interesting and pedagogically important things like exchanging ideas on lesson preparation or presentation, which is what we used to do in the good old days. I'm sure I've left out a couple of things, but that's more or less it. And this we do out of the goodness of our hearts, because no money in the world covers these headaches, and we see VERY VERY LITTLE of it. Is this written down anywhere? I don't think so. But it seems to me that this is pretty much what most of us "freierim" seem to be doing." (*Tessa Shrem )* I also received 2 very thorough and helpful documents from Aviva Shapiro, which I'm attaching here - both a job description and a calendar for coordinators. Hope this is helpful! (*ETNI note - these attachments didn't come through as attachments are not allowed on ETNI list mail) Enjoy the rest of vacation!
