Subject: 'critical' question

In light of recent discussions I feel my query is quite insignificant, nevertheless, here goes: does anyone know why is it that when we write we cross our t's, but when it is typed the letter has an additional 'chupchik' at the bottom? What's the difference, the origin? Is there a specific (perhaps unwritten) rule about it?

And, I'll tell you why I am asking: some, i believe, misguided, students complained about my writing 'a cross', and I need some good comeback, other than-mind oyur own buisness and/or live and let live.

Thanks a million,
Adi
