They don't have to indent, but if they don't indent, they do have to leave a blank line between paragraphs. That's the only way to actually know if they've written in paragraphs or not. And while we're on the subject of paragraphs, starting each new sentence on a new line is NOT the same as writing in paragraphs. I have no idea where the kids learn this, but my own students often do it (at the beginning of the year) and I've seen lots and lots of Bagrut compositions written like this. Another very odd mistake that I see occasionally is kids who start each line with a capital letter (rather than each sentence). And yes, I'm talking about 5 pointers.
