According to Webster, both fun and funny are adj.
but they mean different things.

fun (a):intended for, or giving, pleasure or amusement; as a fun gift. [colloq.]
funny (a): comical; causing laughter

It was great fun.  fun used as a noun
It was really (very) fun.  fun used as an adj. (meaning we had a fun time)
