I don't want to comment on the literature program, but I do want to comment
on what Sharon said (below).  I was rather surprised to learn that Eveline
and A Summer's Reading and Richard Cory were still among the most commonly
taught literary works in Israel.  As far as I know, those pieces appear
together only in EMT, a book which my school hasn't used for a decade or
so.  We've been using A Cool Collection 2 since it came out, I think (and I
believe we tried another book between EMT and A Cool Collection).
Personally, I would be a lot happier if the core literature were to be taken
from a newer anthology (like A Cool Collection) and if ALL of the pieces,
including the play, were to appear in a single book.
Regarding photocopying stories, I think that in many schools (mine
included), that would be very impractical.  Teachers are often limited in
the amount of photocopying they are allowed to do and having the students do
it could be a logistical nightmare.
