Subject: protest in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi
1. Leo Baeck school is organising a special event to identify with and
support one of our teachers, Nir Mayan, who is on hunger strike in Gan
HaVradim.
On Monday, at 12:00 a special service will be held that relates to the
problems in the Israeli Educational System that have evolved over the past
decades.
I am sure that all teachers will find this of interest. Please come along
and support us, and get a text of the service which you can adapt and
perform in your own local district. The more people this text reaches -
whether citizens, officials or teachers - the better.
2. Nir's partner, the Headmaster of a school, will be stopping his hunger
strike after seven days of strike. He will have to stop for health reasons.
He will be going to Rabin's grave at the end of his strike.
One thing some of us can do, is to show support to Nir, to give him the
feeling that he is not alone in his struggle. I suggest that we start a
series of shorter fasts, say of one day, at the same site, and try and
ensure that we have a chain of teachers and interested people fasting along
with Nir over the coming days. If each person who can fasts for a day, we
can keep this chain going endlessly. The "supporting" fast starts Sunday
afternoon, and the first spot is already booked. If people want to continue
the chain and want to coordinate the action, you can contact me by email and
I will be glad to help with this.
