To Adele and Laurie - Hear, hear!!!
English is probably the ONE AND ONLY school subject where English teachers are able to enhance their students' general knowledge, discuss moral issues and deal with current events. As educators, it is our job to do this - not only does it make the lessons more interesting and relevant for our students but it introduces them to cultures and ideas which they might not otherwise meet. Our textbooks do this i.e. Rosa Parks (who died last week) in Challenges, our Literature program does this - All My Sons - America's part in World War II and the American Dream, so I say again YES, YES, YES, -
it is our duty to teach anything which will widen the horizons of our students and this, of course, includes the Jewish festivals and Israeli Special Days. We English teachers have so much to offer our students - let each one of us broaden the minds of his/her students in any way he/she can, without trying to limit what any fellow English teacher might want to teach. As long as the content is moral, not profane and suited to the age of the students - and this will have to be the decision of the individual teacher.
