Subject: RE: Just Vs Only

Dear Rena and all, Every now and then, teachers/native speakers/students come across such linguistic 'problems' as telling the difference between allegedly 'synonyms' such as, 'say/tell', 'also/too', 'if/whether' and now 'just/only'. The only source I know that really gets into the linguistically philosophical differences is Prof. Yishay Tobin's 'Semiotic and Linguistics' bublished by Longman. This fabulous book about language, which reads like a novel if you are a true language freak, sheds light on various linguitic issues that we as teachers of the language should be aware of. I highly recommend it to anyone really intersested in understanding the 'whys' of English and not only the 'hows'. We of all people, should be able to explain things to our students based on real knowledge and Tobin's book is certainly the most reliable source to do this. Hope it helps, Idith
