He liked the pupils, even though Bart could drive any teacher crazy. His good rapport with the pupils made him a good principal. His replacement (by the inspector mefakachat?) was just plain mean to the pupils, all discipline and rules with no leeway. A good principal as a good leader, can turn almost any school into a model school - with both teachers and staff motivated to work as a team for the benefit of all - making the school a fun place to be. I agree that the principal that's there for you, the teacher, that's got your back - can make your job so much easier.
