This Gloria's husband who has been following the issue closely - both because of my wife the teacher, but also because I thought if it was such a good deal I'd sign up. So I recommend that instead of arguing about what is written in the newspaper, you actually go and read what the ministry is really offering: http://cms.education.gov.il/EducationCMS/Units/academic/ http://cms.education.gov.il/EducationCMS/Units/academic/TnaeyHahasaka.htm If you read the conditions, you will see that all - or none - of the numbers in the paper are actually accurate. They are based on a simulation for the new teachers, which is based on all sorts of "typical" assumptions, none of which are clear or spelled out, or is the ministry committed to. There are so many holes in the document I wouldn't know where to start complaining. It seems the only way to really find out what they will offer a specific person: vetek, gmulim, starting salary, etc is to sign up and actually get a contract. But I have the feeling that the contracts will say what the page does - the ministry will set the conditions based on your past experience, which you will not be able to change, and they won't tell you now anyway. Also, the 2,000 - or 3,000 - shekels, depending on whether you are part of Ofek Hadash or not, are a grant. They are not for pension, keren hishtalmut, severance etc. They are also paid out only every 3 months, and who knows when. You also have to pay it back - all of it - if you leave any time before the full 3 years are up, plus the cost of the course. You also have to pay the 6,000 shekel tuition up front and only get it back in 2 stages through the Employment Bureau, and who knows how long that will take. And of course you have to agree to all the Ofek Hadash conditions. And you only get kviut after 3 years. And you have to agree to teach where they decide to send you. And it nowhere explains what they will count as professional vetek. And the higher salaries in the third year are based on you taking on an additional responsibility like being a mehanehet. And they can fire you at any stage, and it seems you will still have to pay back the money (though this is not completely clear). And while you are training all they give you is 2,000 shekels a month (or 70% of your unemployment benefits) which you would also have to pay back if you don't last 3 years. Also it is not really a 3 year commitment, you start school in 2 weeks in mid-March for 6 intensive months, and after that you have the 3 year teaching commitment. Of course after 3 years the grants disappear, and then you are back to a regular teacher's salary in any case. It does say there is a possibly of a smaller grant for the 4th year for those who continue and study for a Masters degree, but the conditions have not yet been set and nothing is clear at all who will get it, if at all. Also, there is no explanation of the course, what types of further training you need - but it seems to match the new Ofek Hadash requirements. In addition, there are a number of open issues that say the conditions will be determined in the future - which means in 2 or 3 years if the ministry and the treasury disagree over money, guess who can get screwed. And that is just the beginning of the questions. I assume that it is a good deal if you would have liked to be a teacher anyway and expect to be unemployed for the next 2 years or so; but otherwise I'd be very careful. Also as to the numbers, it seems they are only going to take 75, not 250 now, but no one seems to know and I just assume they are waiting to see how many people they want actually sign up. I think the 250 is a total based on the budget they agreed to with the treasury and includes math and science teachers too.
