----- Original Message ----- From: "Aviva Taragin" <amtaragin@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: Milonit ?? / Spelling exemptions ??] Here is a synopsis of all the answers I received about the use of a milonit when I posted the question. I hope it helps you. - Your students may use their electronic dictionaries whenever the rest of the class is allowed to use their dictionaries. The reason they have that dispensation is because they can not deal with the regular dictionary due to their learning disability. It does not give them the right to use the dictionary when no dictionaries are being used. - A milonit can be used instead of a dictionary whenever a dictionary can be used (unseen), the idea being that it is quicker / easier to look up the words in a milonit than in a dictionary. It is NOT to be used on a quiz / test when they are supposed to be learning words in order to improve their vocabulary - no matter what hakbatza they are in! - Common sense would say that they get to use it only when the others are using a dictionary - They can use the Milonit together (not instead) with the dictionary. It means that when the rest of the class can use a dictionary (unseen etc.),they are allowed to use the Milonit.. - It says on The English site specifically -but you have to look for it because I don't remember where exactly - but it is NOT with the Bagrut info-- it says in Hebrew that milonit is ONLY to be used when the rest of the class is using a regular dictionary. If no dictionary is in use then no milonit. Tis is particularly mportant for the Junior High Schol who don't use dictionaries - their books have glossaries. - milonit is used only when the rest of the class uses a dictionary - the MOE put out a notice once that a kid with the accomodation of electronic dictionary can only use the milonit when the rest of the class uses the regular dictionary.(for an official answer, ask your inspector or ask on the inspectorate site.) -this problem was solved last year in our school (Mekif Gilo - Jerusalem) when the inspector of the learning disabilities department, Aharona Gvariahu, came and stated once for all that the "millonit" should be used only when the other pupils use the dictionary. In a vocabulary test with a bank of words you may allow the "millonit" after they have translated the words learnt at home or help them with the translation of words in the sentence if you feel there are too many difficult words. - They are allowed to use the milonit only when the other pupils use their dictionaries. I think you can find the official answer on the MOE site. - We have just had the same problem in one of our classes. I spoke to Dr. Beverley Topaz who sent me an answer posted on the FAQS in the English site. Judy Steiner says there very clearly that kids can use the milonit only when the other kids can use the Oxford dictionary! When you test vocabular or verbs in the past, for example, you do not have to allow them to use their milonit. I hope this has helped - Students who can use a Milonit can use it ONLY when the other students are using a regular dictionary. Also they cannot use a Quictionary which translates whole passages.
