Personally, I need the personal interaction for learning.

1. For truly audial learners it makes not difference whether they hear a 'live' voice or a recorded one. Podcasts (or any other method of archiving sound - or sound and video, which, given the development of MPEG4, can also serve to the advantage of the mobile learners) are an ideal medium for audial learners, because they can "re-listen" to whatever they might find hard to grasp at first listening.

For MPEG4, see http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/mpeg4/ for technology description, and http://www.i4u.com/article1422.html for an attractive example)

2. People who need to "experience" lessons are usually kinesthetic learners, not audial ones, and for them, I agree, it is desirable to either attend f2f classes (I can even venture hypothesizing that they constitute the majority of those who attend despite the lectures being optional and not compulsory). However, today's technology can offer wuite a few compensatory techniques and teaching strategies/delivery methods to overcome this difficulty.

3. It makes sense stressing the fact that universities do not cancel f2f classes (which, under the circumstances, would be the best possible course of action, to my mind) - they augment f2f classes with online delivery.

4. The NSD phenomenon has been sufficiently studied to encompass all kinds of learners, not only the visual ones who obviously benefit most from the switch.

5. Despite being an enthusiast of online learning, I believe that the future will bring the optimal balance of f2f and online, in the form of hybrid/blended delivery.

Digitally yours -

Lev
