We too laughed when we saw the official confession of what it's all about in the title of the final powerpoint "Infusing HOTS with the Teaching of Literature"!! But it's no laughing matter! I will give just one more example: What higher order thinking skill is there than a deep comprehension of irony in a piece of literature??? Originally this was on the litany of HOTS in the form of "interpreting the text using literary techniques" and the sample tasks/questions cited on the most important handout we received start with: "Where/how is irony used in the text?" Well, for our final assignment in our course the undersigned and her esteemed colleague, BS, jumped at the opportunity and handed in, what we consider to be a fantastic unit on Ozymandias which I love teaching, including an explicit presentation of the HOTS of irony etc., etc., only to be told by our long-suffering teacher (to whom we all had to apologize for making her life such a misery - when she is a lovely person who just happens to be a victim of the system!) that she would accept it as she loves us so much, but we should know that this is no longer considered a HOTS but only as a literary term which needs to be understood!!! Come to the roundtable discussion at ETAI and make your voice heard!!!
