Subject: superficial. projects

Re any project - the kids can be as superficial or "deep" as we allow them. If they hand in drafts, and the teacher corrects them - not just spelling and grammar, but gives ideas about research questions - the final project will (usually) not be superficial.

We did a lyrics project for 2 years and i really enjoyed it! I learned
a lot about today's singers and music. I also was amazed how many
kids choose the Beatles or Simon and Garfunkle. We also had a lot
of interesting discussions in class about why so many of them choose
love songs, and the differences bettween the songs the boys and the girls choose.

I agree that projects are not easy, but it really depends on the
teacher (as do most things in class...)

A warning about the lyrics projects. They have a tendency to be
abomidably superficial. As an oral tester, I have left the exam day
very depressed after having asked many students who did lyrics
projects, "Yes, and what does your song mean? What is it's message?"
and they come up with almost nothing.
