Subject: the war and us

Friends and colleagues
Do we really need to address the war issues with our students in English
class? Many of them prefer not to discuss politics, terrorism, or war in the
classroom. Perhaps we should concentrate on literature, writing, grammar and
avoid all discussion of war. Perhaps we can use English class as an escape
from the world around us and use it to allow our students to appreciate the
cultural and linguistic beauty of the English language using prose and
fiction rather than the language of war. Perhaps even some love songs, or
songs of peace, of life, of courage. We might even get them to enjoy English
class. They get enough of the war talks in history, and other classes. If
your school is anything like my Yeshiva High School every guest speaker
talks about either the Shoah or the tragedies of War in our times.
I believe this might even be appropriate for our students residing in the
north. They probably have enough support from the pyschologists anyway.
