I have followed the discussion regarding translations. I agree with many of
you. However a real problem here is how blatantly restaurants, stores,
government offices, signs and even English newspapers post sometimes
unbelievable spelling mistakes. We cannot teach our students correct
translations and spelling effectively when they see these mistakes and get
the response from those responsible, "who cares." As English speakers we
need to do something about it. I have offered to correct menus, signs and
even taken the drastic step of writing my corrections on menus or on napkins
tucked under my bill. To date only one establishment took my suggestions
seriously and their new menu is written in excellent English. A great
activity for advanced students is to give them an error riddled menu or sign
and have them find the errors.
