I had avoided getting involved in this topic but...
I am a former high tech worker. I became an English teacher NOT because I
was laid off, but rather because I wanted to leave the field. I had 3 young
kids and couldn't deal with the long hours at the office and frequent week
long trips abroad. I also had a long hidden dream of working with at-risk
youth - and bringing about change. So I decided that anyone could design
optical systems - they don't really need me - but not everyone has the
patience and desire to really make a difference - and work with high school
kids.
Did I retrain? Yes - I studied 2 days a week for 3 years - to get my
teaching certificate in physics (my major), and to get certified to teach
English.
Durng my first year of studies I was asked to sub for a teacher who gave
birth and ended up staying the rest of the year. I had no training and I
made every mistake possible in classroom management. It was a disaster, but
somehow I managed to finish the year. Thankfully, I took some important
classes that year which gave me some valuable tips and helped me not make
(some of) the same mistakes the following year.
Did my 11 years in high tech prepre me to teach? NOT AT ALL!!!
Did I demand vetek for my 11 years in high tech ? of course not.
I did get my studies partially paid for because of the lack of English and
physics teachers - but anyone retraining can get this loan which turns into
a grant after 3 years of working in the field.
This is my 5th year and my teaching has definitely improved as a result of
experience and my studies in efl education.
