From: Susan Holzman <holzms@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: FW: ASIA TEFL Elections I have recently sent the following email (with some modifications. I took out a photograph and changed the text accordingly ) to the entire membership of ASIA TEFL in Israel and, unfortunately many (or maybe most) of the messages returned. If you are a member of ASIA TEFL, please be in contact with me about the elections AND send me an updated email address. If you are not a member, please consider joining this important organization. http://www.asiatefl.org/ Membership is FREE! Many thanks and shavua tov, Susan Holzman Dear members of Asia Tefl, At the recent Asia TEFL conference in Seoul, I participated on a panel discussing national standardized exams in various countries. The panelists included representatives from Taiwan, Iran, Israel, Bangladesh, Vietnam. India, China, Malaysia and Japan. . This panel , in my opinion, expresses the essence of Asia Tefl: countries of Asia, sharing experiences and knowledge about the teaching of English as a foreign language in our region. When Professor Bernard Spolsky, one of the founders of Asia TEFL, asked me to represent Israel (I was at the time chairperson of ETAI) on the Executive Council (EC)of Asia Tefl I agreed without too much thought. I just added it to the list of ETAI responsibilities. ETAI is affiliated with TESOL and IATEFL and I have always considered that international cooperation and representation is very important for an Israeli organization. In 2005, I decided to attend the Asia TEFL conference in Beijing, and I became an Asia TEFL addict. My addiction has taken me to japan, Malaysia**, Bali Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea. I have every intention of going to new Delhi for the upcoming conference in 2012 and to Manila in 2012.* Although all the representatives of the various regions were appointed or volunteered in the beginning of their tenure on the EC , the constitution of the organization requires that new elections be held every two years to reconfirm the representation of the current EC member or to nominate a new one. I would like to ask at this time for you, the members of Asia TEFL Israel, to either suggest nominations for a new EC member from or approve my continued representation for another two years. I am hoping that you will take a few minutes to respond to this email, browse the Asia TEFL website [http://www.asiatefl.org/] (as a member, you have free access to the on line edition of the journal), consider attending the conference in Delhi and encourage your colleagues to join (can be done online at the website). Best wishes for the upcoming school year, Susan Holzman *EC members do not pay conference fees and their accommodation for the four days of the conference is paid for by the organization, but travel expenses are not covered. Some of the EC members have travel allowances from their institutions; those of us who do not (like me). Pay their own travel expenses. ** For this conference and the one in Bali, in order to avoid the Visa question, I travelled on my American passport. Asia TEFL is not political, but some of the host countries' governments are not so open-minded.
