---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jenifer Byk <byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Attention LD teachers Speech disorder and vocabulary acquisition in ESL Dear Anybody who has information, I am teaching a pupil with a fairly severe speech disorder. At the age of 5 he could barely communicate, and when he was 6, he was kept back in kindergarten. He started school at 7. He is now in third grade, and has been learning English for three years. He has managed to acquire very little vocabulary, and finds retrieval hard. On the other hand, his reading is quite good, and if required to write the first letter of a word under its picture, he usually manages, even though he may have difficulty saying the word aloud. His intelligence is above normal, although he is childish for his age. He gets both speech therapy and occupational therapy We are making slow progress, but progress, nonetheless. My question is what is known about the relationship between speech disorders and vocabulary acquisition in a second language. I have trawled the internet, but haven’t been able to find practical suggestions, or even a description of the problem. Input would be greatly appreciated, Jennifer Byk
