From: ELEANOR ZWEBNER <eleanorz541@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Conference, HOTS Conference: I would like to join Aviva in saying how wonderful the conference was. I truly find it inspires me and recharges my batteries --something we all need after the school year. And I too take off the hat that I don't wear to the organizers. Really -- you did a splendid job and everything ran so smoothly. A word of thanks to Eric Cohen for the HOT dog lunch -- it was a really thoughtful idea and I certainly appreciated it ( how many days in a row can I eat tuna fish? ) . HOTS: I join Adele -- Orly chaired the HOT session ( she was in the HOT seat!) smoothly and professionally. On other points, however, I must disagree with Adele . Among the "ANTI " speakers were people who HAD taken the course. Further, as Tessa pointed out, many teachers who had taken the course told us that they were afraid to speak out. This issue has become so divisive that teachers -- although certainly not afraid that they would be fired -- are concerned with their status, their future as leaders in our community. Again -- As Tessa said -- this was / is certainly not the intention of the Inspectorate, but apparently it is an attitude that is being transmitted and felt by people in the field. Also, your feeling that these people are afraid of change is unwarranted. Those that spoke up are leaders of change and they are literature lovers and teachers -- Michal , Eleanor (not me -- the other... ) , Andy -- these are NOT people who are afraid of change! They seek out professional challenges tirelessly! But I wish to remind all teachers --using your metaphor-- the train may have left the station but since it left too early and many of us feel that the route taken was the wrong one, we believe that another train should be made available! If the hundreds of teachers who have been writing and signing continue to refuse to implement the program -- it cannot be implemented. If they / we are afraid of the pupils eventually having problems with the D / F module and they do implement it --then , Adele is right -- Give in now . But if you feel that this program must be seriously --I mean seriously - modified -- before it becomes the new Bagrut -- then stand up and be counted and DON'T IMPLEMENT IT. Continue to send your letters to Dr. Shoshani, to Dr. Zvi Zameret the Chairperson of the Pedagogic Secretariat. The Irgun supports us -- but their support is meaningless if WE don't support ourselves.
