Sorry.), I would like to stress a point I made, but didn’t wish to elaborate on. I will try to say this as diplomatically as I can, because this must be an awful situation for teachers to be in, but I don’t believe all the demands, which make you work so hard, are accomplishing the goal. This is true of the literature too. Don’t get me wrong; I think it is important to teach literature and to have something other than unseens in final tests, but many high school pupils are not ready to be thrown in at the deep end. One of my 10th grade students, being tested on A Summer’s Reading this week, said “I’ve never had to read a story like this before.” And though she is in a 4/5 point class, the level is way beyond her. There are so many words she doesn’t know that it is impossible for her to appreciate the literary values. She typifies many 10th graders. Teachers have no time to address this very serious problem. I won’t mention the writing, which, surprisingly, does not improve by itself, just because the pupils are made to write a lot. Perhaps many teachers will disagree with me, and say that their pupils are benefitting. I know that a great many pupils are not.
