Despite the Zionist ideology of ending the Exile, despite the tax-free
car, the Next Year In Jerusalem, the status of “New Immigrant” (as
opposed to a used one?), making Aliyah is, in addition to choosing
Israel, choosing immigration. Of the millions of immigrants and
wannabe immigrants in the world today, we are the lucky ones. But we
are still immigrants, experiencing that obsessive returning to the
past felt by immigrants all over the world, the loss, an internal
emptiness that has the potential to become the site of fulfillment.
Join me for a half-day of writing about displacement, as we analyze
excerpts from personal essays by Andre Aciman, Eva Hoffman, Bharati
Mukherjee and others. We will use these immigrant writers’ essays as
inspiration for our own exercises, writing from the point of view of
the immigrant.
This workshop is geared for all immigrant writers of non-fiction,
fiction and poetry. The readings are in English. This workshop is not
sponsored by The Jewish Agency.
Bio: Judy Labensohn has been teaching writing for eighteen years. She
founded The Writing Pad in Moshav Beit Zayit in 2013 and moved with it
to Tel Aviv-Yafo in 2015. She holds degrees from the University of
Michigan, Hebrew University, Goucher College and Bar-Ilan University.
For twenty years she wrote a personal essay column in The Jerusalem
Post. Her essays, poetry and stories have been anthologized in college
textbooks and in 2014 she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her most
recent publications are in Consequence: An International Literary
Magazine Focusing on the Culture of War, Lilith Magazine and
forthcoming in Harpur Palate.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she moved to Israel in 1967. Currently, in
addition to teaching and mentoring, she cuts hair at Just Cuts and

Place: The Writing Pad, 53 Rehov Be’eri, Tel Aviv, a five-minute walk
from the 480 bus station and Savidor-Central Train Station.
Cost: NIS 390. This includes readings, nosherei, cold water and hot drinks.
