As a teacher, I do not expect my students' parents to go over their work before it is handed in. It's my job as a teacher to make sure my students know what is expected of them and to make them redo work that is sub-standard. As a parent, I have always hated doing school projects with my children. I don't mind checking their work if they ask me to, but I don't want to do it with (or for) them, nor do I believe that I should have to. I don't think teachers at any level should assign work that the students cannot do on their own. When my daughter was in second grade, she was asked to build a model of Noah's ark. She built it out of a shoebox and did all of the work on her own. I thought it was nice work, considering the fact that she was seven. Her teacher, however, was not satisfied with it and I couldn't understand why until I went to parents' night and saw the other models, which had clearly not been built by seven-year-olds.
