Dear Etniers,
Those of you who have had the privilege of undergoing a sadna with
Judie Segal, the national Bagrut Lit. counsellor, will realize how, if
done according to the Handbook instructions, the LOG can provide can
objective assessment tool.
80% of the grade for each unit is supposed to be comprised of the
Summative Assessment and ONE piece of work (I make it either the
Bridging or the Post Reading depending on the genre).
Both of these are supposed to be done in class, graded and handed back
WITHOUT allowing the student to improve on his/her grade! The
remaining 20% is comprised of work done in class or at home such as:
pre-reading, basic understanding, analysis, vocab exercises etc - for
which no grade need be given, but if a grade is warranted, it becomes
part of the term/semester assessment grade (in our case: mashov) and
is not included in the LOG.
If a student wishes to improve his/her work, I am all for it. Please
do not misunderstand me on this. However, the improvement part may
only be carried out on components NOT included in the "two-per-unit"
80% LOG grades.
Not one of my students in this year's Yud Beth got more than 95% on
the LOG. A number got less than 60%. Several actually failed! The
average was about 75% which is commensurate with (or slightly lower)
than the average Bagrut F test!
