---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: byk <byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Spelling The article in question mentions spelling in its connection to the widespread inability TO READ in the United Kingdowm, today. I understand, from English friends, that an enormous number of school leavers are functionally illiterate! Nobody says English spelling is easy, but most people, (even mildly dyslexic people like myself), do manage. Most of our own pupils learn to read, (and almost all would, if there were specialized teachers to help those who learn to read more slowly). But to blame England's soaring illiteracy rate on spelling, is to find a scapegoat for a failing educational system. The idea of reforming English spelling arrises from time to time, but it seems to pose serious problems in order to accomplish it. I expect that many of you have seen the 'joke' onthe internet about reforming English spelling. It illustrates, I presume, the problems that reformers will have to face.
