From: Phylllis Oded - phylliso@xxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Why I dropped out of the HOTS program February, 2010 Dear Fellow English Teachers; I am writing this letter to inform you that, for the very first time in my life, I have dropped out of a class, namely the HOTS program. Up till now I have always [enthusiastically or otherwise] attended all the available courses offered for English teachers, from the Holocaust lessons in Acco to the 5-day overnight course at Oranim with Judy Steiner and Penny Ur in 1991. Some have helped me become a better educator and in all of them I have forged lifelong friendships, lifelines into the future with other teachers that I have been able to qvetch to, get advice from and share materials with. I was determined to see the HOTS on-line program through [to the bitter end.] Our teacher was enthusiastic and caring. All the others in this course seem to breeze through it. It seemed that only I was in a muddle: not only did I have great difficulty in finding the required poems I needed to analyze within the site, but I simply couldn't relate to any of the given material through the HOTS materials. I tried, really I did, but it seemed that my interpretations were always wrong. Take for example, the poem Happiness by Roger McGough (to read the rest of my letter, go to - http://www.etni.org/letters/HOTS_Phyllis_Oded.doc ) ----------------------------------------------- ** The ETNI Rag ** http://www.etni.org/etnirag/ Much more than just a journal ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org or - http://www.etni.org.il ** ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
