I was tutoring an Ethiopean high school pupil and asked her the well known question - "What did you eat for breakfast?" I expected the usuall, egg, tomato, etc. Then I learned that Ethiopean diet is completely different from what we think of as our usual meals. For me it was a learning experience, but it also opened my eyes to some of the difficultes pupils encounter. Her textbook was also completely disconnected from her life. It was based on the Western "discourse" and I even thought it was too much. I'm sure that writing textbooks is not easy, and asking teachers to adapt their material to their pupils can be overwhelming. But someone could take up the challenge. Thanks for raising this question. I think it's very important. Yona Kates
