Subject: practice books

Hi All,

In case some of you are out of the loop, there are also Meitzav
practice books for 5th and 8th grades. There's a plethora of options
for Bagrut, some with a little "extra".

As a counselor for ORT, I constantly harp on the over-use of these
books in class. I totally agree, and have the proof of my own
classwork, that proper teaching with coursebooks leads to success and
true learning. Of course, there's room for pupils getting acquainted
with the kind of questions they need to answer on the exams, but this
should be limited and kept in perspective.

I have a sincere gripe with one series of textbooks on the
market...Results for 3, 4 and 5 Points. They are, in my opinion,
glorified practice books despite the unit format. These are fine for
use in some of the after school enrichment programs but I feel they
are not appropriate as a proper coursebook despite their approval by
the Ministry. Unfortunately, last year, I was unable to even find a
proper coursebook other than this for one class level and complained
to the publisher who explained that this is what teachers want!

Sad state of affairs.
Laurie
