That's a very good bridging question, but I (and my pupils) don't like
the final question - How does this information add to your
understanding of the play?
"It doesn't. I understood the play perfectly well without this
information." It adds to my understanding of why the author wrote the
play, and why he portrayed certain characters as he did, etc. I told
my pupils to learn certain sentences by heart for use if they are
confronted with a question such as this: "Authors/Playwrights often
draw on their own experiences to enhance their writing."
I think the final question needs to be rephrased. Perhaps something
like: What aspects of Rose's own experiences are reflected in the
play?
