Subject: website for oral English for weak grade 12 student

Regarding weak students in grade 12 – I have found two websites to be very
helpful.

1. For help in oral English, have a look at yabla.com. I used it to
study French a couple of years ago, but they also offer English and other
languages.

Yabla offers several sample video clips to start with, and a small monthly
subscription fee for those wishing to go further. What Yabla offers are
small video clips, with each and every word (even the 'um's) written
underneath as it is spoken, and below that a box with the word for word
translation. Both these boxes can be minimized if the student wishes. If a
student doesn't understand a certain word he can click on it and get the
dictionary translation. This word is then added to his collection of 'flash
cards', which he can go over at will. The flash cards are organized into
sets of 20. The video clip itself offers the possibility of slowing down
the speed of speech, or replaying phrases/sentences. This is useful for
people like me who have a 'slow ear' and want to actually hear every word.
It can also help the student to practice pronunciation and speaking.

One of the features offered in the video clip is a 'game' where the student
has to listen for a missing word and provide it; he can go over the same
video several times, and the game varies each time. It's a great way to
learn to actually listen and understand what is spoken.

The video clips vary from music clips to documentary/news. There's
something for everyone.

For students seeking to improve their oral English and listening skills this
is very helpful.

2. Another site to check out is the bbc:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/ there are plenty of
learning opportunities here, for all levels.

Good luck!
