Hi Everyone, My question is very simple. Why isn't 'HOTS' included in ALL programs? If I have learned one thing as a teacher, it is that children need to be taught to 'think' and 'analyze' from a very young age. What good is learning a language if you can't 'think' and 'solve problems' in that language? Cheryle Tacher San Juan, Puerto Rico -----Original Message----- From: aviva shapiro <shapiroaviva@xxxxxxxxx> To: ETNI <etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tue, 10 Feb 2009 5:52 am Subject: [etni] HOTS don't kill literature. Dear All, Infusing HOTS into teaching literature doesn't kill it.. I'm sure ost of you ask some type of WHY questions and that is thinking ! After eaching literature for over 20 years I took part in the PILOT and found it o be extremely refreshing !! BUT more importantly so did most of my pupils ! AS for the explicit use of the terminology it's just a simple matter . My pupils when reflecting on how the HOTS had affected their daily life aid that certain skills had definitely helped them. These are comparing nd contrasting, problem solving, viewing things from different perspectives uncovering motives and even.. parts and whole. I saw that they were also etter equipped to analyze situations and texts. have just finished teaching a story in 10th grade (not for the LOG ) and I sed the tools I used in the pilot and it was really much more interesting o teach and the students really enjoyed the unit on the story "The Split herry Tree" ( by J esse Stuart) and the way it was taught. THEY even asked f they could do the LOG which unfortunately I understand they can't !! Anyways.. the bottom line is , in my humble opinion , this program is here o stay so use it as an opportunity . Believe me, for those many , many tudents who are not test -oriented the LOG is fair way to assess them. As teacher I saw how It also strengthened my students' confidence and gave hem a chance to improve their English skills. (both reading and writing) ruthfully , I wish I could only use literature to teach English . AND good luck to all of us doing the bagrut on the 17th.. May it be fair and ay our students NOT have forgotten all we have taught them. At least I now that MY students got fair grades in the module F - Literature LOGS !! and now it's ONLY module G they have to struggle with !!)
