[etni] HOTS making connections

Regarding Rena's question about the HOTS used by her student to answer the
question
I believe that this illustrates perfectly the problem of the literature
program. The raison d'etre for the program was supposed to be teaching
pupils higher level thinking skills (through literature) , wasn't it? How
much higher can you go than when a kid uses their own head to find a
thinking skill that goes beyond the ones they are supposed to parrot from
the list prescribed by the Ministry. If we do not give them credit for
thinking for themselves, but only within the narrow limits that are set down
in the program, what are we teaching them? Certainly no HIGHER thinking
skills.

I think the answer the pupil gave shows creativity, understanding and was
well-justified and connected to the story. If her answer doesn't show
'making connections', I don't know what making connections is. I might take
off a point or two to satisfy the requirement of mentioning one of the HOTS
specifically (following instructions), but I'd feel bad for not giving her
full points on this answer. I would feel gratified that she had acquired
and applied a HOTS and has a mind of her own (no thanks to me, or the HOTS
program, I'm sure).
