I'd like to second Fruma's praise of the winter ETAI at the Reali School in Haifa. I know how exhausted we teachers feel when a holiday break comes around and how tempting it is to avoid filling our calendars with anything work related...however, I must say that getting a stimulating shot (or two) in the professional arm and meeting up with colleagues, students, teachers and friends from our past provides for a most pleasureable and rejuvenating experience. The winter ETAI in Haifa was first rate. Both sessions I attended gave me ideas which I look forward to utilizing - especially the one by the British Council about getting kids to talk! Dr. Elisheva Barkon's presentation on the importance of vocabulary was fascinating and thought provoking. Dr Judy Steiner presented important changes to the curriculum. Masterful Penny Ur gave a presentation on large heterogeneous classes which perfectly balanced "learning by listening" and "learning by doing". I must give a great big THANK YOU to all of the people who worked so hard as conveners and presenters. I have always encouraged my staff and friends to become members of ETAI and attend the conferences; the winter session has motivated me to repeat that in bold italics!
